Airbnb limits checkout chores and host-imposed contracts starting November 20
On October 21, 2026, Airbnb released a new set of communal policies that revolve around 'limiting host-imposed contracts and other requirements', along with changes to the house rules hosts can set. The changes take effect on November 20, 2026. Under the new "reasonable requests" list, hosts can ask renters to put dishes in the sink or dishwasher, but not to wash them and put them away; to gather used towels, but not to remove sheets and start running a load of laundry; and to separate trash and recycling, but not to take rubbish to an off-site location. Hosts can still ask guests to switch off appliances like the AC when they leave, but they can't bar guests from using amenities.
Why it matters: Before November 20, it's worth reading your listing's house rules, checkout steps and any separate rental agreement you use, and planning cleaning time and costs on the assumption that guests won't strip beds or haul trash.
